I think our eyes somehow see what we know is there or what is supposed to be there, this kind of reminds me of the <a href="http://mokokoma.co.za/the-meaning-behind-12-famous-logo-designs-you-will-see-today/" title="writing: The meaning behind 12+ Famous logo designs you will see today" rel="nofollow">FedEx logo</a>, most people only started realizing the arrow formed by the "E" and "X" only after they read the creative rationale behind the logo.
