Ian Houghton,

The knowledge and skills required are quite crucial, what I'm defending here is how we judge too much on where and how the skills and knowledge are acquired — instead of the presence or absence of such expertise. Like I said, I think it's mostly a question of the credibility behind one's means of acquiring the expertise.

Well said. I've also seen enough very average graduates of graphic design or visual communication programs to convince me that a degree isn't a necessary prerequisite of being a graphic designer. I believe that it's all about your personal motivation and the way you approach it; if one is critical and selective enough with one's own work (while keeping the bigger picture in mind i.e. other designers' work), it's going to be unlikely that the product will be substandard.

Comment on eAdvertising: pay per click or per exposure? by Liz

Pay per click makes sense when ads are published on websites where the advertiser has no idea what kind of traffic the website has (as in the case of adsense). One of the sites I run has peculiarly low traffic despite a high alexa ranking and really decent page rank.

If advertisers were being paid per impression, then they would be paying money for nothing essentially since the alexa and PR metrics would lead them to believe that I have higher traffic.

Once a site can prove really high traffic, the site will naturally have advertisers clamouring to advertise on a fixed price basis, as they will know that it is worth their while eg the advertising on 2oceansvibe.com.

Phanuel,

Like I said, I share the same points of view as Andrew. Luckily, I've just published this <a href="http://mokokoma.co.za/traditional-graphic-designers-endangered-species-of-modern-day/" title="Writing: Traditional graphic designers, endangered species of modern day" rel="follow" rel="nofollow">writing</a> which I think explains the correlation between graphic design and branding.

I also tried to articulate how graphic design that isn't backed by a branding strategy is futile in todays' overcrowded markets.

I disagree with Andrew graphic design doesn't need brands. Design is as important as a building of a company.

Andrew Sabatier,

I share the same sentiments, graphic design is just one portion of the numerous disciplines that exist to help articulate a brand.
