gmk,

I think clients should tell you what they'd like to achieve so you're able to 'propose' a design solution quoted based on a list of things you'll require to solve their design challenge.

Figo Mago,

Agreed, the need to educate clients is evident.

Once again I think this is - as you have noted many times - one area where a bit of client education is required.

Perhaps using a real-world analogy can help clarify things for clients - let's take housing.

There are shacks. There are mansions. You need to do some legwork for yourself first to determine which one you can afford before embarrassingly commisioning a renowned architect to design you a shack.

With design services, it does not help either that web people who build and sell "digital shacks" are viewed in the same manner as "renowned digital architects".

Throw in some naughty clients who know the deal but deliberately try to get much more for less, and you have an assortment of challenges to deal with.

But yes, solution No1 is education of prospects.

Agreed. And it is something i struggle with immensely - is getting an indication of budget ... along with a full list of requirements - so i can do a costing that is based on the requirements and if necessary broken into choosable segments if the quote is above the budget.
